+ 2ND POEMS: Words From A Cross On A Hill Outside Jerusalem

[after Luke 23]

I do not know why He spoke thus to me,

to make the awful effort just to say

that from this Roman cross, I go to be

with Him in that great garden, Paradise:

and not just "soon," or "sometime," but Today.

I only asked to be thought of when He

came into His Kingdom:  a memory

to be contemplated from time to time.

But He promised to me a more sublime---

and (best of all) a living---destiny.

Doubt may assail me, like these biting flies.

But I know just exactly what I heard,

His promise, clear, although in great gasps spoken---

my soul will be safe even with flesh broken.
