Cast thy care upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee;
He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
---LXX Psalm 54:22
Lord, I pray for help to bear my cross
into the shadowed terrors of tomorrow;
strenghten me among them, I pray, without loss
of my faith, or other spiritual sorrow.
I admit my cowardice, and I am weak
(as usual before this) with crushing fear
(which I cannot harness to my will);
the evil one seeks to give the pain a tweak.
Draw me closer to Yourself, Lord, much more near
so that I may---despite my trembling---hear
Your voice as you command the stormtroubled sea---
which seeks to devour my sinking bravery
in sight of that morning hour's agony---
rebuking it with those few words, Peace, be still!
and the broiling storm submits to Peace
and its terrifying harassments cease.
I beg You, Lord, grant this to me
(despite the failures, faults and perfidies
that have stained my sad soul). Please, receive my pleas.
I ask, for tomorrow, tranquility,
and for that hour---unshaken serenity.
