Papu’s Berets

“Oh, what a strange hat!” said my friend. “That fat guy looks kind of awesome”, said another one. “Well that’s my grandfather”, I replied. Weird hat, weird doesn’t cut it, awesome I would prefer to call it. You would never see him underdressed for any occasion, he always looked sharp. We used to call my grandfather Papu, he was a chubby and stylish old man. He always dressed amazingly well, he combined the colors perfectly and he never had a stain. He passed away last summer and my grandmother had to go through a lot of pain, and even though we miss him we know that he is with us every step of the way. Papu’s most precious accessory, I mean his most priced, most appreciated piece of clothing were his berets. Those odd looking hats, those things that don’t even block sunlight, those things that made him look magnificent. He always wore them, whether it was Sunday or Monday, whether it was cold or hot, it didn’t matter the day or the weather. He wore them all the time and everywhere, in the movies and in the restaurants he wouldn’t care. He would always wear them to mass, and nobody would dare tell him it was wrong. It’s was funny how he had worn berets since his early 20’s, he was thin then and those hats made him look peculiar. Papu had berets of many colors, but his favorite beret was his black one. That well polished, looking hat that seemed to be made especially for him. It fit him perfectly, it was almost as if he was born with it, it was a sight to behold. You would think that Papu spent thousands of dollars in clothing but truth is he managed to take care of his own wardrobe. He had berets that had more years than my mother; he had berets that were from brands that no longer existed. But why did he wear them? I’d never thought about it, why did Papu wear berets? I was extremely curious that I had to figure it out, so I went to my grandma’s house to ask her. “Its simple really” said my grandma which we call “La Nanana”. “Papu got a bald spot on the top of his head at a very young age, don’t get me wrong he was still extremely handsome at that time, but still, he was going bald. So he always used a beret to cover that hairless part of his head. He used it in winter when it was cold, because the beret protected him from the weather. He also used in summer, because he didn’t like the sunlight hitting him directly to the skin. Most importantly Isaac, and she looked at me with a smile curling upon her lip, he wore them because I loved those silly looking berets.” Dead silence, after a 15 second pause I told La Nanana “I really miss him, don’t you?” “Every single day” she replied.
