I promise I'll call

I promise I’ll call, we’ll keep in touch,

The last words you spoke to me.

One last hug, you held back your tears

Mine, a river finding its way to the sea.

On the tip of my tongue, I held back three words,

That I used to share with you.

I will always regret not giving you the chance,

To tell me that you loved me too.

I climbed in the car, a new life waiting out there,

An old one standing a few feet away.

Never wanting to go, without you by my side,

Mind racing with all the things I want to say.

As I drove away, I watched in the mirror,

For some signal that you wanted me back.

But no sign of a tear, no remorse in your eyes,

The pain starting to feel like a heart attack.

What should I expect, It’s already been almost a year,

Since the time you told me, we were through.

But I never lost hope, always gave us a chance,

To start over and find love renewed.

She promised she’d call, we will keep in touch,

I think out loud to calm my racing heart.

But she will be so far away, and I love her so much,

We have never been this far apart.

Fading into the horizon, the love of my life,

Watches me leave, her thoughts just a mystery.

I’ll never know what, went on in her head,

My tears, my broken heart, my pain did she even see.

But I’m off to start a life, to help me forget,

The loss, the pain and those happy times.

Any more waiting and I, would have taken my life,

Leaving her a note, to tell her how I felt with my rhymes.
