While he is gone

She works quietly alone

To keep family and home

Together.

For a month or a day

While he is away

With their family she will stay

Forever.

A serviceman’s wife

Has a difficult life

Through storms and strife

Weathers.

Keeping faith, he will return

To love and hearth for which he yearns

Their hearts, loneliness spurns,

Together.

If the unthinkable happens and he does not come

She will survive and maintain that home.

With the camaraderie known by few,

Their compadres will see them through.

Raising a family with two at home

Is a hard proposition at best

To do it on her own

Puts her to the test.

Like a trooper, she will hang on

Until he comes marching home

To make the family whole once more

And his country safe from war.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Wanted to recognize the wives of our service people who have to keep the family together when their spouses are called to defend our nations.  They are the unsung heros in a conflict.

Wonderful tribute to a special group of people, the military spouse. True warriors in their own right.

This poems brought tears to my eyes. Knowing that the husband of a colleague-author from a writing club went into the war against terrorism, it brings the feelings close. Beautifully written!
