A SEAMANS LIFE

Boats and bait

smells that take your breath.

Crews of young men,

fish to clean and weigh.

Waves and raging waters

winds that cut right through.

No thanks ever given

to a man that makes his home on the sea.

He leaves home and hearth,

traveling far from home.

Leaves thoughts of having a family and wife.

Making his life on the open waters

that is the way of a seaman's life.

Hi Renee It just amazes me everytime I read another one of your poems. There is nothing that you cannot put down on paper. Another great read again :) Roz

As an ex-sailor who has spent a few years at sea, I truely enjoyed this one! MUCH! Even though I was not into the fishing thing! You did well bringing out the feel of the sea!

As always, a great piece from a poet who sees all walks of life. One suggestion, however (if you don't mind) "HEARTH" Probably just a typo... Luv Amy

Miranda Rae's picture

Renee, This reminds me of a Billy Joel song called "Downeastern Alexa"; do you remember that one? It's about the fisherman who live and work off Long Island and their many hardships including loneliness at being away from home and the decreasing number of fish in their waters. I don't think I could handle being a fisherman; it smells too much and I can't bait my own hook. :) You're amazing in that you can write about any subject yet all of your pieces have that Renee zest, heart, and humor (when needed).
