I often thought that, but I

I often thought that, but I also remembered---that the larger the job, and the more lucrative, the more it owned me and interfered with my private life, and those things which are now my real life---my faith, the poetry, some historical research, quiet evenings, etc.  The rat race has one reward---what Saint Paul called filthy lucre.  And to get that reward, the soul must be sold, and the integrity must be compromised.  I want no part of that happy crap.

I, too, am glad I didn't

I, too, am glad I didn't pursue the "rat race" of trying to acquire corporate advancement.  Although my retirement will be based on social security mostly, and our budget as retired people will be tight, I have the satisfaction that I did not "sell my soul" to my first or second employer where my life life might have been severely altered.
