Velcro Friction

Folder:
Extended Metaphors

We complemented

each other so well-

You had a fondness

for stroking

my velvet smoothness,

a fixation

from the very first touch.

I had a tendency

to wrap myself around

the belief that you

could remain

attached to me.

But our union was

prefabricated to

endure only light

resistance,

worn out in time

from overdependence.

Our ties were

wrought with pretension

where I relied

too heavily on hope

until trust frayed.

Man, you fractured

our bond-

my confidence in

love became torn-

when you

ripped us apart.

I should’ve seen it coming:

after all, you used

temporary adhesive.

Rewrite 2012

We complemented
each other so well-

You had a fondness
for stroking
my velvet smoothness,
a fixation
from the very first touch.

I had a tendency
to wrap myself around
the belief that you
could remain
attached to me.

But our union was
prefabricated to
endure only light
resistance,
worn out in time
from overdependence.

Our ties were
wrought with pretension
where I relied
too heavily on hope
until trust frayed.

Man, you fractured
our bond-
my confidence in
love became torn-
when you
ripped us apart.

I should’ve seen it coming:
after all, you used
temporary adhesive.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Velcro is the brand name for a hook-and-loop fastener; that will explain the metaphors in stanzas 2 and 3.

:-) I really like this and the whole idea behind it. Well structured and painfully good concept.

Well done
