THE DRUNKENING

I feel sorry

for guys

like Steve Carlton

who refuse

to admit

that it’s over

It’s a shame

we’ll be stuck

with the image

of a 47 year old man

pitching in the minors

instead of

the glorious

Hall of Fame career

Author's Notes/Comments:

this was written in the late 89's when Steve Carlton refusing to retire after a brilliant Hall of Fame career signed a minor league contract with the belief he could work his way back up.  I was wrong, though.  I don't really remember the sad ending.  I think mostly of his great years with the Phillies including a Cy Young campaign in their World Series championship year of 1980.  The sight of him in the triple A uniform has faded.
