Pandora's Words

How do I say those simple words,
The ones I fear and dread?
How could I spit these awful thoughts
that're  spilling from my head?

I know my tongue can make
the sweetest words galore.
But right now I need to make
The words I made before.

Just move your tongue,
and clench your teeth,
and kiss your hope goodbye.
Remember now, it's buried deep
in years now long passed by.

My hands, they swell,
my eyes, they burn.
This struggle can't compare
to what will pass when I learn
these words of pure despair.

Though years have passed
I've found them now,
those darkest words I fear.
I just don't know that I can say
what needs to be made clear.

I hope you'll see that these words
Aren't meant to hurt you now.
They're here to save my withered soul,
I'm just not quite sure how.

The pain you cause me
Sinks so deep into my lonely mind.
What really hurts is that the pain
Is because you are so kind.

So close your eyes,
Hold my hands,
And listen closely, dear.
I'm so afraid my voice will crack
And you will never hear.

I'd give my smile,
I'd give my heart,
I'd steal your pain away.
If you would just let me
Fall apart and slip away.

Forgive me now,
Forgive me, please,
For these words locked so tight.
Because I know without a doubt,
They'll lose you sleep tonight.

He doesn't love me, never will.
I know that very well.
But he's the one who was able
To break my through my tired shell.

These words aren't for you, dear,
But your pain is mine as well.
These words were never for you, dear,
But they were never mine as well.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I started writing this poem just before I broke up with my boyfriend, and I finished it months later when we made ammends. You can probably tell where the transition happens, but I kind of like the change in atmosphere. I think it adds the feeling of time to the poem.

I liked this poem very much.

you have great talents as a writer I've read your entire portfolio and I am impressed. Keep writing your audience is accepting. The commentary of your work is also capturing of the imagination...as for this poem", Pandora's Words", this is our quandary that of humanity and of love. It is soothing and wounding, both gallant and heartbreaking, both rekindling and injurious. Devotion to another is a brave feat, no wonder it is done with such trepidation. Love is a reciprocal act and it takes two to have acceptance of the other lovers love.  It the giving and receiving that defines the responsibilities of love.

Peace
