THE MONSOON AND THE VILLAGE GIRL

The monsoon clouds hovered overhead,
People were toiling for their daily bread,
Young souls in love near a shore,
Arm in arm, not longing for more...

In the fields I heard a maiden singing,
Ah, the joy in her vibrant being!
In a sky blue dress, young, with wavy hair,
Her presence made everything fair.

She was oblivious to the world around,
Higher and higher her joy did abound,
Eyes gazing at a dream in her flight,
If only her beloved had seen the sight!

The branch swayed to her wild rapture,
Unseen angels wished they could capture,
The beauty of God's best creation,
And the heaven too smiled in adoration.

She was no Lucy Gray* nor Annabel Lee*,
She was a Pakistani village 'fairy',
Modest and fair, yet joyous, carefree,
She was every inch an Eastern beauty.

Years have passed yet she stays lovely,
In the secret corners of my memory,
I have seen rustic charm but she,
Exuded magic from her beauty.

Simplicity was her quaint hallmark,
And innocence as pure as a lark,
Petite, alluring, even rapturous,
Unforgettable -- that monsoon and she!
