JUST FILL MY GOBLET O MY SAQI (A translation)

The sun has gone down, O Saqi,

So bring the cup and the drink O Saqi.

Let me drink... oh, let us all drink,

Let it be on the house tonight, O Saqi.

Bring the goblet closer to my lips,

Or make me drink from your gaze, O Saqi.

Fill the cup of all the sinners here,

Even this is too a good deed, O Saqi.

Where will we heart-broken men go from here?

Your tavern saves us from the world, O Saqi.

The sun has bid its farewell O Saqi,

Fill my goblet with your drink O Saqi.

The sun has hidden its face, O Saqi,

Fill the goblet with wine, O Saqi.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This is an inspired rendition of a famous Urdu ghazal. The reader must bear in mind that in the East, the terms 'drink, 'goblet' and 'cup' have many connotations some of which are allegorical. The 'Saqi' as referred to here is the veiled beautiful woman who fills the goblets of the drinkers.
