The Demon's Masquerade

In the land of Nod live spirits

Those that live outside of time

All the races of sun and moon

And those of purely mind

Yet even these are sometimes lonely

Not all exist in states of bliss

And a yearning for those few aspects

Of a humanity they miss

So once was known a demon prince

In Lonely Castle found

Who receded from the others

And closed off all his lands around

So determined to his sorrow

And melencholy bound

He built himself a castle keep

And lived deep within the ground

There were those that tried to reach him

And they pounded at his gate

But he paid them scant attention

As they implored him to relate

That which had caused this cruel malaise

Internal conflict as of late

Yet he could not speak of shattered dreams

And a love that drowned in hate

Yet the community persisted

That the prince should Live again

And assembled friends insisted

Of a plan to ease the pain

If a way is found, he missed it

Although he wracked infernal brain

But still they swore that one existed

And held a ball in Prince's name

A masquerade of such proportions

That every creature would attend

And through there magic, spin distortions

And cause reality to bend

And so adorning Lonely Castle

In decorations of the fay

They sent the call to one and all

And the ball got underway

First, the Fauns arrived in concert

Skipping Nymphs frolick behind

Heading straight into the ballroom

Drinking all that they could find

Next, a swarthy brace of Centaurs

Leering lewdly at the Nymphs

And behind them several Phantoms

Plus a score or two of Imps

The Evles arrived in regal state

As Elves are prone to do

And the Dwarves came, brought their cousins

Goblins, Gnomes, and Gremlins too

But then the Tribes of Sun arriving

Drew the gaze of one and all

Momentarily subsiding

Festivities of Demon's ball

As their host stared in amazement

At Nature's beauty come to call

For the Tribe's of Sun eclipsing

Next to which all others pall

First a troop of tiny Pixies

Ever flitting to and fro

The Leprachauns just stroll right in

With pots of gold in tow

The Brownies stand with mouths agape

Their eyes and faces all aglow

But all eyes turned to the Fairys

Who's beauty truly stole the show

Yet throughout the crowd of lovelies

As Demon Prince's eye did rove

And fell upon the silver coach

In which there princess drove

A carraige made of moonbeams

Spun of gossamer and light

Wove a glowing opelescence

To form a globe within the night

Drapes of softest spider silk

Which unseen hand pulled tight

His eyes that strive to pierce the shrowd

That hides her face from sight

Just then the princess exits

And a gasp runs through the crowd

And the prince has been struck breathless

Else he would have gasped aloud

Overpoweringly lovely

Dulcet voice the sound of bells

Smile so warm to thaw the ice

Of the prince's private Hell

And for the first time in existance

Since the time the demon fell

He felt a stir within his heart

Whose name he couldn't tell

He stood and gazed on Beauty

Drank her in from head to toe

But his brain refused description

Needing words it didn't know

For so unearthly was this Beauty

That common speach defied to show

That subtleness of grace, held in carraige, poise and face

That Prince's words just simply failed to flow

Of eyes that shown not blue, not green

Nor truly shade of grey

But shifting somewhere in between

And never constant stay

Mischeif's glint a spark so bright

To turn this night to day

And the prince thanked all creation

For having crafted her this way

She didn't spy him on the stairway

For creeping shadows formed his cloak

Yet he watched her as she mingled

Hung on ever word she spoke

For hours, he saw little else

So enchanted by her spell

But then reaching to conclusion

That he'd once known this feeling well

It's time in Life so fleeting short

Just enough to recognize

What had led the prince, until this night

To isolate and agonize

At last he could no longer

Simply hold himself in state

Caused the Prince to reconsider

And his sentiments relate

So he summoned all his courage

And made his way through whirling crowd

And shortly stood before her

Forced his voice to speak aloud

And asked if he might have this dance

But no sooner had he spoke

Than the clock released the hour

As it fell on midnight stroke

And as it struck, she flashed a grin

The fairy princess fled

And she vanished as does the rainbow

As away her carraige sped

His euphoria now faded

As she rides into the night

And the silence seems to mock him

With first beams of morning light

So he called his guests and bid them leave

Saying nothing of his plight

On that road of good intentions

Well meant advice not always right

The last party-goer vanished

As the demon bolts the door

And rests his head between his hands

And sinks onto the floor

For he never would have listened

Had he but known what lay in store

A party thrown to cheer him

And now he's worse off than before

For he's in love with Fairy Princess

And she doesn't seem to know

Oh she noticed that he noticed her

As his approach would clearly show

But thow his chance lay right before him

Still he watched it come and go

Now the prince knows that he Loves her

Though he cannot tell her so

So now the hall lies cold and empty

The drawbridge raised, the door is barred

Yet the memory of Beauty's face

Makes isolation hard

And he wishes he could tell her

But since she does not feel the same

He feels the truth may chance to hurt her

And he would never cause her pain

So he sits in Lonely Castle

With his own careless heart to blame

And lives forever in the memory

Of the masquerade when Beauty came

Magnificent! Beyond good, as I read each line, I could visualize each scene. That, my friend is Genius. Though Cinderellalike, It still carries itself as its own theme, its own story. Please put this to print and have it illustrated, don't keep it tucked away on this site for only the few to read, publish it! --Sam
