The Short Walk To The Library

I saw someone today,

That looked too much like

Someone I knew,

And when they looked at me,

I went wide-eyed and sustained in disbelief

For in the minute lasting only as long as a smile,

The sudden vast vacuum of space filled

between my ears.

I ran away,

With hands flailing inside my jacket pockets.

Rushing into the swinging Library doors,

but lingering just enough to look up at you again.

Friendly stranger, who I out-speed-walked

You were so beautiful

And glowing today.

In the 9 am sun

Your hair was just the same,

Might have been a different color

I could ask you a million questions

And never tire

The pavement under you

Looked perfect.

I miss you

Your poem was so good it

Your poem was so good it inspired one of my own, and I acknowledged this in a headnote to the poem.
