Legos

Legos” by Celeste A. Vásquez

I ran out the school doors and noticed a familiar black fancy car on the pick-up area. I saw him wave his right-hand toward me as if responding the question in my head of whether it was him or not. I got on the car surprised by the fact that he came to pick me from school and asked where mom was. He said she was being kept at work and he was near the area but that he had TONS of stuff to-do (as usual) and I had to go run some business errands with him. I was okay with that, I liked being around dad.

He went in the Broadway mall’s parking lot and sort of looked for an available parking space but saw none. Hepulled in a handicapped space. Of course he would that, he was “in a hurry,” but again he always was.
-“maybe you should stay here buddy, I’ll be quick, want anything?”
-“A drink… and a chocolate bar”- I didn’t really want anything, I just said that cause he asked.
-Won’t take me more than a minute- he affirmed to me as he stare directly at the blue sign with the white-line symbol of the wheel-chair,  I think he said it to excuse himself, whatever. He was that type you-know, the type that is always in a hurry, had his cell-phone inside his ear and you never knew whether he was talking to you or the person inside his ear. Often looked at you weird when you responded and he wasn’t talking to you, as if you were the rude-one. He took about 20-minutes which I guess was not that long, since no one that actually needed the space came about, but it felt like an eternity as I sat on the car looking at the building’s front doors. He came out and almost ran to the car with a plastic bag in each hand. He got on the car and hand it me one of the bags and threw the other one on the back seat. I pulled a rectangular box out of the bag followed by a 3-musketeers bar and an apple juice.

I stared at box on my lap a bit in shock. It was the Supersonic Special Edition Legos. I had asked mom for them and she said “they’re too expensive sweetie, Christmas is almost here, maybe ask Santa to have one of his elves make ‘em for you.” I was still frozen by the surprise and wondering how he figured I wanted these when his voice brought me back from the shock.
–Well? Do you like it?, do I get a thank-you at least?-
-Of course!- I exclaimed allowing the excitement to show on my face– This is the best!.. You are the best!- I remembered the other bag and now wanted to peek to see what else he bought. I notice thru the bag it was the same box of Legos
-you bought two?, who is the other one for?- I asked feeling a bit nosy.
-Jim Burton’s son, he is this business partner... well not yet but we are going tbe partners soon, when we close the deal- he explained
-How come you get his son a price?, why doesn’t his dad get it for him?- I said a bit confused and for some reason almost bothered by the fact that my dad had gotten Mr. Burton’s son the same Legos.
-Is not a price you silly!, he is having a birthday party and Jim invited me for some reason- he said in a annoyed kind of voice.
-Are you going? How old is his son turning? Can I go with you? – I asked as the idea came to mind.
-Well no, I am not actually going to the party. Im just dropping off the present and taking some papers so Burton can sign them already… just want to get it over with- he explained exasperated. I shrunk inside my shoulders and the excitement of the Legos had past me. We sat in silence for about a minute. Until his next phone-call came around and he started speaking to the air again.

-I guess you can come with me… I think he is your age - he said still doubtful –just to drop it off, we can’t stay for long though- “you can’t”  I thought to myself without saying anything because I felt lucky enough that he agreed to take me and that I had a new set of Legos.

We arrived at Tim Burton’s house and my dad got off with the tacky-looking plastic bag in his hand and some manila folders on the other. We followed the party-sign that pointed toward their backyard, Mr. Burton came toward us as he saw us walking in. He greeted us with a smile and patted my dad’s shoulder –How is it going? I’m glad you made it- Mr. Burton said in a loud and honest voice, he seemed so nice.

–I actually just came to drop of the present Jim… and to go over the deal you know- my dad explained shyly. –Business later John- Mr. Burton said in a very serious tone –but let me get Ben, so you can give him the present, hold on- he turned towards the pool and shouted –Ben!, get over here- I turned toward Ben and couldn’t help to stare, well, he wasdifferent. His face was big, he had almond shaped eyes and his mouth was half-open combined with a half-smile. Ben stand in front of us and I noticed my dad was frozen too, he snapped back and handed Ben the plastic bag, -excuse the wrapping- my dad said. –Not a problem- Burton replied indifferent.
Ben pulled out the box of Legos and look at it with his dad.–Shouldn’t have spent so much John, He’ll probably chew on them- Mr. Burton said with a laugh. –I’m sorry Jim, I didn’t know” my dad replied with an embarrass expression and a shaky voice.
-Don’t even worry about it, this just means I get to build it with him.-
