On The Way

And on the way, I paused-

paused to reflect upon everything and nothing,

for both were present before me and ever so inviting.

I slid a flower petal between my fingertips,

just to feel its silky softness glide beneath my skin

and mesh me into its pulsing fabric.

I smelled the air as it passed in a flurry of rushing currents,

just to hear myself sigh in longing

as time balanced upon this very second.

I picked a wilting blade of grass from where it stood helpless,

just to give it one more second of life

among the trampling footsteps of time.

I touched the bark of a gnarly-rooted tree,

just to experience the roughness of its soft nature

and tell it, 'your not so tough, old man'.

I listened to the trilling chorus of branch-perched creatures,

just to learn their well-practiced song

and sing along, even if off-keyed, for who cares this moment but I?

I opened myself up, even long-closed off areas,

just to welcome in all that's familliar and all that's foreign

if only to be a part of something...anything, to ground me to this here and now.

And on the way, I paused-

paused to reflect upon everything and nothing,

for both were present before me and ever so inviting.
