Fallen Stonework

The moonlight reflects pale off the

crumbling walls of this town

Broken bricks block the paths where

no one walks any more

Dust coats the cracks in windows and

the nails that hold them down

To protect the mildewed curtains that

hide the grandeur that came before

One more stone falls tonight, beneath

the weight of the moon

To lie amidst the broken bricks

unseen by anyone

One more layer of dust tonight, but

not enough to hide the wound

Time's tender healing brings only

disease with the dawn of another sun
