The hourglass

Do you remember when you were young?
On the beach you would see the beautiful sand
Feel its smooth texture upon your skin
Swipe its coarseness from your hair
Taste its flavour on your tongue

Would you grab it?
Handful after handful
Just to watch it slide from your fingertips
Would you sometimes try to hold onto it
But find that every move you made
More and more would slip away
And tumble to the ground
To once again become lost in the unfamiliar sea

I feel as if your friendship is the sand
That, long ago, I struggled to hold onto
As if the specs that fall
Like in an hour glass
Represent the time we have left together

And that the sand,
Already fallen,
Are the pieces of you
Slowly spilling away
Melding into everything else
Becoming just another
Somebody that I used to know

________ Alternate additional ending __________

Never mind though,
I'm a big boy now
I stopped playing in the sand years ago...
