Who is the Greatest?

They debated, and argued in a fray,

What fuzz! what brawl ! -, but what was it  about?

They quarreled  and the bickered on the way

Without respite, along the dusty route.

What was the subject of the hot dispute?

The controversy and the argument?,

Of  His disciples  in cantankerous feud,-

His loved ones that were slow to understand.

The question: “Who is  greatest among us?

Reply:  “the greatest  can be only me,-

Because I,- Phillip - caught the biggest bass

When fishing on the choppy  squally sea!.

“It’s I that knows Traditions and the Law,

Spoke the disciple Andrew angrily,

I am the best with tools like drill and saw,

And have a forceful personality“.

“It’s I that will with our Master reign,

For I was Baptist John’s most closest peer,

And was the first among his faithful train,

And it was I who had the Baptist's ear".

It’s I that does deserve the highest throne,

Below your own when you come in your  reign,

And not Nathaniel nor James or John,

T'is I that have by far the better brain.

The master turned around and  gently smiled

Upon the quarreling fellows’ heated face,

And looked around and called a little child

That held a new-born lamb in it's embrace.

And spoke: “the greatest  is the lowliest,

The peon stooping low and washing feet,

Equipped with towel, as factotum dressed,

He will - hear this!- the others all precede.

In heaven chiefs and bosses are mal-vu,-

No Janissary, peons, nor hussar,

But joy  in all that is -  forever new,

But meanwhile know- “ I love you as you are!”

And should your failings perhaps be most grave-,

And  even if you sadly disobey,

Do not inordinately  fret and chafe,

Take heart!  Amen!-  I love you anyway~!
