That Fame

Folder:
2001

you get to stand on the top

everyday

you can wake up

and know it

feel it

that you are on top

people admire you

look up to you

want to be you

know what its like

to live you

it must be amazing to know

that people cry when you do

they feel love when you do

they dream of doing what

you do

I want to be there too

in the bright lights

where people chant my name

and people faint at my feet

I want to tell them it can happen

to them too

if they only have a dream

but I guess Ill never taste it

and I just watch you now

as you sit on top

only beautiful people

sit on top

in the bright bright lights

and people want to be you

dont you know how great it is

when people want to be you

they love you without knowing you

talking to you

understanding you

you have friends

that you dont have to call

but theyll be there

you have friends

you dont need to listen to

but they wont care

you have friends

who have such blind faith

doesnt it scare you

but you sit on top

and it doesnt really matter

everyone wants to be you

do you remember what it was like

to be them

Michelle, This poem reminds me of what a friend of mine went thru. He was a lead guitarist for a very popular band and (like many others) the fame went to his head, he left the band and wound up doing nothing. Linda

Michelle, In my radio heyday I experienced "fame" on a very small and local level. It is EXACTLY as you describe in this poem FOR A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. It doesn't take long for jealous peers to wait for a chance to knock you down a few wrungs, for wackos to start harassing you, and for some people to do whatever they can to be your friend just so they can get a piece of you, be able to brag "hey, I'm friends with so-and-so", etc. It makes you paranoid after a while, and it seems you do have to work harder and top yourself just to stay where you are. (Thus the price of fame that people talk about so much.) Not to mention your privacy disappears to a certain extent, and you find you always have to be "on" and live up to whatever image you may have (even if it's on a public bus on your own time and you feel like shit!) Sheesh, I experienced all that on a very small and local level. If you multiply that by a gazillion you get an inkling of what it must be like for real celebrities. I enjoyed this poem, Michelle. The accuracy of your words reminded me of how it felt when I was first riding that first happy little wave of local fame; those feelings are ones I haven't felt or been reminded of in quite a while. Thanks for sharing!

I like this. For stardom totally changes a persons life. I wonder what they really feel after the hype wares off.
