Monday Morning.

Every Monday they come from all directions many with walking sticks others in wheel chairs. Invalids get together to exchange information about their various illnesses, to pass on new information about Pensions or Doctors and new treatments. On fine sunny days they head for the Park they do not seem to care who listens to what they have to say.

On wet or windy days they head for one of the local cafes. Most of the cafes welcome the invalids after all they bring in much needed capital. Times are bad and every fresh coin is welcome.

I have often been asked to join I had not the heart to say no and finally joined this invalid club. For that is what it had developed into an invalid club. All that had some kind of disability was welcome. No club fees were charged, one paid for ones own refreshments and that is still the rule today. From the café that was used the most we had permission from the owner to install a microphone and a loud speaker. One of the younger men walked to the microphone and started to sing one of the modern songs. The applause was deafening now we had a few singers and a choir. Invitations to sing or put on a show at other cafes came pouring in.

Soon we had earned enough money to rent a local hall. Now the club was getting all of the advertising that it needed. The moneys coming in to the Invalid Club was carefully given to charities. My favourite was the children’s Hospital. The sick children were given each a toy, the toys were chosen by one invalid that was grandfather to eight children. A few words from him to the sick child and he knew just the right toy for that child.

The invalid club is getting to be very well known many are the invalids that want to join and no one is refused.  Now at the local hospital every patient classified as an invalid is given one of the cards that we have had printed. On the card are a few simple instructions with our Phone Number and an invitation to join us. You too can start off such a club I am sure that in your town there are many invalids that would enjoy such an opportunity to get together even if it is just to discuss what is new for people with permanent ailments. Or even to have a drink with others in the same boat as themselves. Do not be shy no one is going to bite you. If your ailment permits then start off your own Invalid Club, It will keep you occupied no time that drags slowly through the day causing you to have depressive fits. Less time to run to the Doctors giving him time to attend to other cases that need him perhaps more urgently than you. I, Bern dare you to start off your club. You will be surprised at the numbers of people that will ready to help you, perhaps the best thing that you have ever done.
