Rise and Fall

As I climb into darkness, drifting higher and higher,
I see far below me and all the earth is on fire.
Every achievement envisaged, each legacy built,
Is burning brightly from all the shame and the guilt.

No weight in existence in now more than my heart,
A stone of regret at my role from the start.
Tears of frustration, of anguish forever.
There was more to be done, to make the world better.

We find comfort in the depths of our hatred,
An easy corruption in our vanity and pride,
The temptation of power, swept us further away,
On currents of crimson, engulfed by the tide.

Love which was once colossal and pure,
Now lies disfigured and burnt by the flame.
Usurped in position by our violence and lust,
For which outcome, we all were to blame.

There are those who looked past the illusion,
Discovered the truth beneath our skin.
Knew the greatest threat came not from outside,
But from the monsters that lay within.

Now those that survive and remember,
Memorise the sunlight and hilltops of grass.
Tell stories of humanity's cloudburst collapse,
When we were shattered and broken like glass.
