Ascension

Forced down further to your knees,
Beaten bloody and struck blind.
A body scarred with constant struggle,
And by the demons of your mind.

You reminisced of all the sorrow,
Looked back with certain dread,
Regretful of the path you chose,
All the tears that had been shed.

Each time you tried to tell them,
To see the world the way you do.
They laughed and joked so casually,
At the easy target that was you.

You fell further back to darkness.
Into shadows far from light.
Tortured yourself in all despair,
Sinking lower, out of sight.

To receive attention so badly craved,
To avoid each pain that heals and mends.
You became what you hated most,
Turned on both your family and friends.

You thought it without consequence,
But were so often wracked with guilt.
That what you’d made was all your fault,
Stone by stone, the prison that you’d built.

You searched for answers but none were found,
A solution that could not exist.
An escape you dreamed would never happen,
An opportunity forever missed.

You did not know which way to turn.
In isolation you felt alone.
Unable to understand right from wrong.
And all the hatred that was shown.

But one day you’ll find the strength within,
Glance upward toward the skies.
To discover the person you truly are.

And in that moment. Rise.
