She wakes up, eyes tired, looking haggard. She goes to the bathroom, looks at the prescription bottle, and tells herself she doesn’t need them. It’s been two days, she stares at the frame on her night table, she reminds herself she does it for them and no one else. She looks at the calendar she placed on her wall the night before, she still has 28 days to prove herself, she has to prove herself. She puts her night shift outfit and heads to the restaurant. She knows she’s being watched so she does her best, she serves all her tables and leaves at 6am in the morning. She looks at the apartment, promises herself she will fix it before time runs out and takes a shower.

Day three, she wakes up, goes to the bathroom and throws the pills into the trashcan, convincing herself, one more time, she doesn’t need them. Once again, she prepares for her shift at work, she continues trying to do her best, trying to improve. Weeks have passed and she starts to feel different, people tell her she’s changing for good. She feels confident, the fifteenth day she attempts to change her look, cuts her hair short, “you look so professional” they said.

Day twenty, her improvement at work amazes her partners and her usual clientele. Sometimes she stops to see her life, she knows she’s better but still feels empty inside, just like the first day, she desires more. She convinces herself she doesn’t need the pills. She tries to avoid those feelings whenever they appear.

Day twenty-seven, due date is near, everything is settled up, apartment is clean, the room is ready for them. She reminds something, she glances to the night table, ‘how long has it been closed?’ she asks herself. She opens the drawer, she notices it at the back of the drawer. She rushes to take the bottle, she’s afraid and excited. She places the pills next to the lamp and takes a step back. She takes her clothes off, crawls into the blankets, and stares at the night table. She forgets everything and falls asleep.
