A Fairy Tale

Once upon a time, there was a gentle king who lived in a black granite castle in the midst of a flourishing kingdom.  He had 5 daughters, each more beautiful than the last.

The youngest, Princess Chastity, was the sweetest and most beautiful.  A handsome prince from a faraway land braved a thousand seas and killed terrible monsters just to see her face.  They fell in love at first sight, married, and lived happily ever after… or so the story goes, it’s unclear whether Prince Valiant was able to maintain that sort of effort for as long as they both lived.

The next youngest, Princess Melody, loved dancing and dreaming and singing beautiful songs.  When she met Prince Charming at one of the typical balls, they naturally charmed eachother.  He showered her with gifts and luxuries, lavished her with affection, and swept her off her feet.  They danced and dreamed together until the end of their days, a satisfying ending indeed.

Princess Harmony, the middle child, met Sir Fealty while he was visiting in the middle of a gruelling military campaign.  She saw him off, and he pledged his undying love, swearing upon his honor to return or die trying.  They spent many years pining for eachother, each receiving only one letter for every ten they sent.  When Sir Fealty finally returned victorious, he swept her into his arms and they spent the rest of their days making up for lost time.

Princess Patience famously declared “I can wait forever for my true prince to find me!”  But she lost her conviction as she watched her three younger sisters marry before she did.  In a rare fit of haste, she wed the very next suitor to present himself, Lord Boor.  Unfortunately the Lord’s charming facade wore off quickly only to reveal a callous and dismissive nature.  The Princess lived in a cloud of despair so thick that the Lord’s disgruntled cunningfolk visited on a weekly basis, offering to poison him for a small fee.  Princess Patience took her wedding vows very seriously, and she quietly worked behind her husband, easing the distress he caused the townsfolk.  She spent the rest of her life learning the true meaning of patience, as one would expect from a cautionary tale.

The oldest, Princess Grace, spent all her time attending to the affairs of the king and castle.  She was so busy with the running of the kingdom that she never found a proper suitor.  Or maybe no proper suitor ever found her.  Perhaps that doesn’t matter much, because one day, the king died, and then she became the queen.

You had me at fairy tales. I love reading them, they portray the dreams and aspirations of the common folk during the middle ages.

I think you have given modern reality a whimsical spin in this tale. This could happen today no problema. Yes, I enjoyed it, thank you for sharing.
