Emeralds do not outshine diamond

sparked dew. Speckled light smeared

in reflective rain at night shakes awake

the imagined connotations of light 

like neon seen through a water opaqued

windshield. The surface of pooled rain 

gives off far more brilliance.

.

I watch mythical eyelashes

close and slowly open

as if they covered semi-precious

stones pressured into existence.

More than the chipped off

and sanded smooth. Clearly

more.

.

Rock-cut potential for illumination,

a marble face and a marble laurel

that long ago owned a model

that saw with sparkling eyes

the world of ancient stone 

cutters.
