Her Poem for him. His Poem for her.

They lie apart now.

Opposite sides of the bed,

opposite sides of the wall,

opposite sides of the world.

They are joined only by an unmentioned daily routine,

the only way of letting the other know they are there,

screaming "Yes I care, and I miss you!"

Months, it had taken her.

She still hadn't adjusted to that fateful evening.

Sheet half wrapped round her as she sat up in bed,

arms resting over her hips, desperately trying to sit still.

They never took their eyes off each other,

yet couldn't hold each other's gaze.

The decision had been thrown to the wind.

"As always"

In the end it had come down to him.

He knew it was too bright where he was,

and also too dark for her.

His conscience was clear he'd kept his biggest promise.

Logic helped him tell himself it wouldn't always hurt.

Didn't already, even.

I hope you're alright without me, out there,

'cause I'm not doing as well as I might be.

Their minds continued to trick them from time to time, but world kept on turning,

in the sure and certain knowledge of a more finite denouement.

They lie apart now.

Different beds,

different walls.

Different worlds
