The Old Hag

I awake in the dead of night
My body being smothered in a steamy pile of too many blankets
Drenched from head to foot in sticky sweat
Just another humid summers night

As I attempt to throw off the covers
To feel the cool air
As I attempted to free myself of these sweltering sheets
I find I cannot do so

My arms wont budge an inch!
It's as if every part of them had been glued to the bed
But not just my arms... my legs too!
It takes all the strength of my body just to wiggle a finger.

And now something even stranger - even more horrifying!
I hear the dry, cracked whispering
The hurried mummers
The thick throaty rasps

Garbled chanting swirls in my head
Words so close to recognition - but not quite
With great strain, with great effort - I slowly will my head to turn
The teeth clenched in my mouth and my neck hurting from strain

And now I wish I hadn't looked!!!
A creature shockingly hideous is looming over my bedside
I open my mouth to scream!
To call for help - but words do not come out... for I have only the strength to whisper

Her long, greasy grey hair tangled and in knots, dangles from her scalp
Those eyes!
Glittering and black, seem to bulge from her tortured face
Her teeth are crooked and few

Her skin is worn and weathered
Her hands - just skin and bone
She looks at me and smiles a sickening smile
For she knows I am at her mercy.

And in a flash she is gone!
But her picture in my mind remains
Anxiety as overtaken me
Panic spreads as I find I am still incapable of movement

Hours go by as I lay - frozen in fear
Immobile
Incapable of calling for aid
All I can do is breath, blink my eyes, and wait

Author's Notes/Comments:

For those of you who have not heard of anything like this happening... IT DOES HAPPEN!!! I have experienced it only a few times in my life. One of the most terrifying experiences I have EVER gone through. Don't take my word for it though, go to google (or any other search engine) and look up "old hag syndrome". It is a real problem real people have gone through. I am not making this up. Check the facts and see for yourself. Thanks for reading!

Loved the poem and the way of words depicted here ...

I confess .... I have never been a victim of the old hag .. of course the closest resembling to an 'old hag' would be my 'better half' .. who raises hell to wake me up !! :P

Also .. the way your poem runs through the various emotions marks very much of a professional .. Greta Job & great Stuff ...

Do review a few of my poems if Time permits .. :)

Sleep Paralysis

Like I have said, I have had to deal with sleep paralysis in the past... a truly horrifying thing! I have never directly known anybody else to have this problem altho I do know it happens. I have never actually seen the fabled "old hag" but I definitely know the feeling of complete vulnerability and helplessness. Thanks for reading!!!
