I Knew Then

So, here's my soliloquy
Oh, the way we'd laugh
When you tried to pronounce "soliloquy"
I still remember crying from stomach cramps
The lumps in the pull-out couch
That kept us from sleeping
And, the way we told ourselves
They were the reason

I knew then
It was you

I'm not one for speeches
So, who am I kidding
Pretending I'm one for speeches
So, as much as it hurts to admit it
I miss your calico cat
And, the way you had my tongue
From the first moment we met

I knew then
It was you

How can I forget our first summer
In the back of a beat-up Ford
Your hair adorned with flowers our first summer
The power and the fear
That only first love brings
Even now, I still sing of
That summer with each new year

I knew then
It was you

That summer was bookended in a portrait of pink skies
The tilting earth and setting sun
Bookended that summer in a portrait of pink skies
And, I still remember your dress
Blue, loose, and falling off one shoulder
Of your sun-kissed skin
Revealing the few untouched parts
