Downtown Nights

Four eighteen-year-old girls, who had known each other since kindergarten were talking about their plans for the weekend. Their names are Samantha, Megan, Christina, and Victoria. Christina had the apartment in downtown her parents had bought a couple years back, all to themselves. Her parents were out of town giving a conference in Los Angeles, and the four girls had been desperate to finally be able to walk around the city with no curfew. On Saturday afternoon they thought it would be a great idea to catch a late night movie, on none other than the old cinema that was in the heart of downtown. They could not pass the chance the walk around 5th avenue when all the bars opened and they could see cute guys walking by. This was specifically the reason they weren’t allowed to be wandering around at night, being underage and all. When it was about time for the movie to start, the girls started walking toward the cinema, already noticing the happy hour drunks that were roaming around.

The movie started promptly at 6:30 pm and lasted about an hour and forty-five minutes. It was one of those romantic Nicholas Sparks movies, so as you can imagine the girls bawled their eyes out the entire movie. Why does someone always have to die? Anyways, at around a quarter past eight it was the perfect time to grab a late dinner. They chose to eat at an Italian restaurant that was a few streets above the cinema. As per usual, the portions of the plates were humongous, and even though they shared plates, they couldn't manage to eat it all. Near the area were the restaurant was at, or rather in most of downtown, there are a lot of homeless people, so as the girls went outside with a bag of leftovers, they saw a homeless man right in front of the restaurant sitting on the curb. Megan thought it would be a nice gesture to give the man the food, as he was probably hungry. This was typical Megan, doing random acts of kindness. She always says it’s better to give them food rather than money because who knows how they'll spend it. Anyway, the four girls approached him and told him they had some food left over, the man then grabbed the bag and threw it on the floor, at the same time screaming curse words. The poor man couldn’t even speak, slurred words coming out of his mouth. Maybe he was drunk, on drugs, or plain crazy. Samantha, Christina and Victoria freaked out and started running from the crazy man. On the other hand, Megan just stood there shocked that their somewhat kind action was bad received. When Megan was able to catch up to the rest of her friends she was shocked to find the three girls being ambushed by four guys who looked very drunk. She managed to pull away her friends from the crowd and they all started walking at a brisk pace toward the apartment. Once they were safe and sound, they promised each other to never again go out that late, praising their parents’ words that it can be dangerous to walk around at night. On the other hand, maybe they would return, at least in two more years when they were twenty-one.
