Excerpts by Sonny Carroll

I Am Not

***********

"I am not the texture of my hair, nor the color of my skin.

I am not the contours of my face. So please refrain from making judgments based on my heritage or race.

Instead, look deep into my eyes, where you will discover that in many ways, you and I are like one another.

Strengths and weaknesses born of the human condition, prayers in the night and acts of contrition.

No doubt, we share the same hopes for a better tomorrow.

No doubt, we have struggled with the same pain and sorrow.

Look into my eyes and you will see that parts of you are like parts of me.

No doubt, I have cried your same tears and known your same fears. Have made a toast to life and sang your same cheers.

I am likely nothing of what you perceive me to be.  But like you, I am only a spirit that longs to be free."

Beautiful

***********

"She's beautiful. The words are uttered with a sense of longing and reverence. To be beautiful is to be desired and sought after. Beauty is an image that it stirs the imagination, awakens desire and heightens the senses. For many, it's a commodity bartered for wealth, status and acceptance.

She longs to be beautiful and as she moves along the runway of life, she wears a smile that feigns indifference, but she's afraid... afraid you'll discover every flaw or imperfection and as she stands before the mirror, she's obsessed by her own reflection.

She's compelled by the perfect images of beauty she sees as she thumbs through the pages of some high fashion magazine.

Her hair, her nails, her make-up, her clothes. The madness grows. She buys into the lies, the images, sculpted, digitally enhanced.

She pays with her self-worth; a cost that she fails to measure as her true and timeless beauty is lost like a sunken treasure."
