IS GOVERNOR GRAY DAVIS BACKING HIGH-TECH HOUND HUNTING OF BEARS?
The individuals hand-picked by California governor Gray Davis to serve on
the powerful state Fish and Game Commission are crusading to thwart
legislation that would halt the notoriously unsporting and inhumane
practice of high-tech hound hunting of black bears. Reports from the
state capitol in Sacramento indicate that Governor Davis administration
has been lobbying against the legislation, A.B. 342, and will soon
publicly declare its opposition to the wildlife protection measure. Hound
hunters chase bears or bobcats to up trees and shoot them from their
stationary position. The hunter uses a tracking device to locate the bear
after his dogs have chased their exhausted quarry into a tree or other
inescapable situation. The hunter then shoots the animal at point-blank
range, collecting the trophy after the dogs maul the fallen and wounded
bear or tear at the lifeless carcass. This practice is so unsporting and
cruel that it has been banned by recent ballot initiatives in Colo.,
Mass., Ore., and Wash., and even many hunters find it an abhorrent
practice. It is unacceptable that Governor Davis has appointed apologists
for this activity and may have his own administration defend this cruelty.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
All citizens, especially Californians, should contact Governor Gray Davis
office before Tuesday, April 8, to express their dismay over his apparent
support of hi-tech hound hunting. Let the Governors office know that the
Governor is out of step with the vast majority of Californians who oppose
this highly unsportsmanlike and inhumane practice.
Please call today; A.B. 342 is scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday, April
8.
