JEWISH PEACE MOVEMENT

Phillip Solomon who

resigned from West Point rather

than be involved in killing:

"I was positive that I objected to war in any form, to killing for any cause, that these beliefs were a substantive part of my

spiritual nature, and that I couold not become party to any military system. I was vexed and disillusioned by the existence

of the system which was the law of the land, a law which indiscriminately prescribed a formula for my conscience. In my ire, I designated it as a Selective Slavery System, for was it not a form of slavery to have to register for the draft, to carry a draft card, to be given a status of citizenship? Draft cards, to me, were symbols of involuntary servitude. I didn't think that free men should be forced to carry them.... What right

did a group of distant men have to judge my system of morality?

What qualified them to understand my soul? I knew I had the

absolute right to my mind, yet an agency of the government

existed which said I did not have this absolute right. I looked upon modern militarism as a form of organized religion; the

draft card was a sacrament of that religion. The generals, admirals, and their subordinate officers were priests. The politicians and industrialists were missionaires; preaching,

practicing, and spreading the gospel of evil, hate, and killing. All wars were holy in nature. Political ideologies

were prayers. The battlefield was an altar upon which men were

sacrificed to the gods of war. The battle itself was a Dionysian

festival, and the participants were intoxicated with the wine of

necrophilia. Bombs and tanks, warships and jet bombers, bullets and napalm were icons to which men had become subservient."

"The law of the land indiscriminately prescribed a formula for

my conscience."

"You are a coward, (he said and I replied) I am braver than you Father

(dialogue between soldier father and conscientious objector son)."

"The bayonet is a phallic system killing in a sexual manner.

The wound is a female symbol."

"I would escape the predatory spirit of my father's bayonet.

"Modern militarism is a form of organized religion."
