PSIRU Capsule
FirstEnergy has expanded rapidly buying and selling companies in NE US. The company's merger with GPU in Novemeber 2001 made it into one of the largest electric utility holding companies in the US. The acquisition nearly doubled FirstEnergy's customer count.
In a reversal of GPU's centralisation strategy and attempt to create a national brand, FirstEnergy is operating the original companies that constituted GPU: Penelec, Met-Ed and Jersey Central Power & Light.
Its acquisition of GPU, which sold its US power plants prior to the merger, added 1,500 MW of capacity from international power projects. GPU also contributed overseas utilities; however, FirstEnergy is selling these businesses to focus on its domestic operations. It has divested Australian utility GasNet and has agreed to sell UK utility Midlands Electricity; it also plans to sell its Argentine utility.
GPU was acquired by Firstenergy in November 2001.
The financial data shown in the PSIRU database relates to GPU as far as 1998. The figures for 199-2001 arefor FirstEnergy.
