I TOOK A WALK THE OTHER DAY

I TOOK A WALK THE OTHER DAY

(T. Beechey)

I took a walk the other day

To the other side of the tracks

For no real reason, just to say

I'd seen the whole ball of wax

I'd thought about it many times

But I'd heard the tales of lore

About poverty and violent crimes

So I chose not to explore

I took a walk the other day to the other side of the tracks

I'd heard the place was in decay and the people lived in shacks

But it didn't look that different that what I'd known before

And everywhere that I went was certainly no eyesore

I took a walk the other day to the other side of the tracks

At first the sky was dark and gray, then the clouds seemed to relax

The sun peeked out, bit and bit, till each ray began to pour

Its radiance and didn't quit all along its afternoon tour

I took a walk the other day to the other side of the tracks

I thought the people would turn away and I'd just see their backs

But they greeted me with friendly smiles, hugs and kisses galore

No dismissals, no denials --- I felt accepted on their shore

I took a walk the other day to the other side of the tracks

I met a woman, her name was Fay and I met her husband Max

Fay showed me pictures of their kids, Max talked about the war

They told me about all they did since the vows of love they swore

I took a walk the other day to the other side of the tracks

I saw children having fun at play skipping rope and tossing jacks

There were happy people everywhere, welcome mats at every door

No one seemed to have a care, at least, none they couldn't ignore

I took a walk the other day to the other side of the tracks

Till the sun took its final sway and the blues all changed to blacks

We talked about this and that, everything and more

We sang and laughed, then we sat around the fire's roar

I took a walk the other day

To the other side of the tracks

I never thought that I would stay

But here's where I bag unpacks

I found a place where I belong

Where I know what I'm here for

And if this is what they say is wrong

I don't want to be right anymore
