WHERE WERE YOU AT?

Do you recall the promise that you made?

One day last fall, we were sitting in the shade

Of a spreading oak and this is what you said:

“When your spirit's broke, I will come and lift your head.”

I really thought I could take you at your word

I said “Thanks a lot”, my heart was really stirred

Then came a time when I really needed you...

My biggest crime was thinking you were true



So where were you at

When my world came crumbling down?

All alone I sat

A stranger in my hometown

You once told me that

By my side you could be found

So where were you at

When my world came crumbling down?



I checked each place where I knew you would go

They said your face no longer seemed to show

I even tried to call your family

I know they lied when they heard it was me

I called your phone, it rang and rang and rang

I went to your home and gave your doorbell a clang

Nobody came, so I sent you a note

But the mailman claimed no one lived where I wrote



So where were you at

When my world came rumbling down?

Till it was flat

And level with the ground

You once told me that

By my side you could be found

So where were you at

So I have no choice but to do this by myself

I still hear your voice saying you would always help

I just had to ask and you'd always be there ---

Take off that mask of friendship that you wear

I can't believe that you'd treat me this way

That you'd deceive and send my heart astray

I don't think I'll find a way to understand

Your state of mind because it's out of hand
