MY CHILDHOOD POETRY SEPTEMBER 13, 2003

nicknames are thrown

around in my family

reflecting our

predisposition

towards endearing each other

through images and sounds;

a brother is called La Ting

because of his bald head

eldest brother is labelled Ming

in spite of Thai

another is called Lung

instead of Ing because of his

horoscope dragon which in

Mandarin is Lung

youngest brother is called Bee

my own spontaneous invention

when I saw the cute little child

in mom's hands many years

back and the name stayed

I am so proud that this is

the only creation in my life

that has been used for so long

and that it has surprising given

brother all the good luck

he turns out to be a bank's manager

he should have me to thank

for all his good luck

another brother is called Chi

Instead  of Kui

eldest sister is Pui instead

of Hua

all these names were initially

spontaneous utterings which

surprisingly were picked up

to be used for a lifetime

by the whole family

it leads to my judgement of our

family members as  homosapiens

with that latent potential to

immediatley coin words arising

from their inner experiences

which explains why our family

have our own code words for many

many of the things in our environment.

We call many of our neighbours

by secret nicknames normally

a coined word for the way they

talk, walk, and even look

some of which are so utterly naughty that

we really hope not one in

the world would know about them

This also explains why I have been crazy

with words since a young age speaking

English, Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia and

Japanese in equal ease.

Our family just bubble in our neighbourhood

because of our incessant inner creative jest

to coin all those secret words which only

we should know.
