When was it that lawyers
Inherited the earth?
Was it when we elected them
To our legislatures
To the exclusion of practically
Everyone else?
After all, who but a lawyer
Knows the law?
Or was it when they became judges
Who seem to have decided
There are no bad lawyers
At least none who deserve
A little time in jail?
Or was it when they charged
For phone calls, unsolicited letters
And unobserved "billable hours"
At two hundred, three hundred, five hundred
Dollars an hour and nobody could complain?
The bill came from a lawyer
That should be enough justification
After all, to whom would you complain?
Your legislator?
Your judge?
Maybe your state bar?
Better get a lawyer
