2nd Date

It was the second time we went out; the day after we met. We parked on the side of a dirt rode and jumped out of the car. I'm sure you thought we were lost and it wasn't the easiest climb. Maybe you didn't need my help, but my hand was always there and you always took it.

By the time we reached the top the sun was setting over the mountains. You could see the streams of sunlight spotting the foothills. The mountains were glowing purple and the sky was burning red and gold. It was beautiful, but it didn’t last long.

After the sunset the city lights started to glimmer under the evening mist that covered the valley. Suddenly the darkness set in. We were suspended in the air, completely free and looking down on the world. One by one the lights closed in. Not just to the East or to the North, but all around us. They were sapphire blue and ruby red and emerald green. Then the clouds disappeared and the stars came out. It was so clear we could see the Milky Way in a thousand brilliant stars shooting over us – or under us. We were completely lost in space. There was no one in the world but you and me. Nothing mattered except just being with you.

Just before we came down we saw a shooting star. I never found out what you wished for, but that doesn’t matter now. My wish didn’t come true, and I may never see you again.

Since when does anything else matter? Who am I without that moment? You could wait your whole life to feel that way, and it would not be a wasted life. I pray I don't have to wait that long to know that feeling again.
