Looking in a keepsake box from childhood,
I found a Polaroid of me in a Cub Scout uniform
Looking pretty slipshod next to the others.
As puberty lurked casually around the corner,
They tried to make a good little soldier of me
Though the scout uniform never did quite fit
Like a fish out of water I couldn’t breathe
No Eagle Scout here or soldier of the reign.
When Vietnam called I donned a sailor’s cap
Sneaking off to war on a ship without a gun
Just trying to survive without killing anyone.
