Did I Get It Wrong In High School Civics?

I know I have forgotten a lot; but I seem to remember that, in high school civics, we were taught that the Founders of our Reoublic objected to personal rule (such as that of King George III) and felt that, in the Republic, only Law should rule.  An elected official, even the Innkeeper (whether he cares to admit this or not) is bound by oath to carry out such duties as the Constitution and Statutary Law designates.  He does not rule or reign.

The Roman Republic began to fail when the Imperium was raised above the rule of law and the deliberations of the Senate.

Caligula . . . Nero . . . Domitian . . . they were horrific emperors.  Our nation faces a possibibility, not yet actually realized, of far, far worse, making those three emperors seem like unruly children at play.

We do not elect rulers or regnants; we elect public servants.  Even the Innkeeper needs to learn this.
