To Each Of The Thugs Who Murdered Matthew Shepard

Even regret, remorse, or real repentence

should not reduce, by one moment, your sentence.

Too bad that we cannot, now, circumvent

the proscribed cruelty of punishment---

to treat you now as you mistreated him,

not for mere vengeance, or some savage whim

(as was your uncouth, shallow motivation)

but to give all the world a demonstration

that such behavior finds no toleration;

that none should be assaulted or stripped of

life just for who that person needs to love.

But you will face a far worse condemnation,

and into Lake Fire searing fathoms slammed---

and you can truly say, "Well, I'll be damned."
