Epigram On A Medieval Baron, Of Dignity Barren

[must be more than a thousand years ago,

because we said, "never in a thousand years"]

No not all of his subjected ones

accept him as their own, that dunce.

See through his sideshow charlatan's

sleight of hand and slight of mind.

Look a bit closer:  you will find

that he has robbed nobility

of every shred of dignity.

Each peer, like each poor peasant, knows

this emperor lacks any clothes;

but still he likes to preen and pose.

For all his many money bags,

his clothes, like his words, are just rags.

And everyone who disagrees

is listed with his enemies.
