The AEHN

Faint swishes of some unknown fabric could be heard
closing our distance, tossing questions by whispers
and commentary, predisposed as I am; wishing them away
towards the far walls, the highest draperies or the windows
we will be clawing at within these, the few hours we recognize.
Our exchanges forgo the tactful hush. Bled from escalation,
we laugh and trade quip for wit and reference for some obscure
knowledge that few might understand, but we can. And we will.

In parallels we've collided, and they disturb me; remind me...
Let this leather consume me! These ideas and inclinations -
nonsense abundant in this hemorrhaging wound, just above my eye,
that often drips into my mouth when I allow it to wag like a fool.
There, like pennies wedged; I can only taste the copper in my gums.
Flooded by this Aqua blue, this verdant majesty from so far back;
I am given you in a form I hadn't approved, and beyond me you stretch,
until the curvature of you is all that's left to confound me, here on Earth,
while you attempt to carve your name into Heaven's floor.

Planted firm, I will pillar for reason, and despair at its absence.
Fortify me at base, and stand aside as I press myself against
this thin acquiescence of those who said they'd remain and fled,
for I will rebuff their return, their petitions and misgivings, and they
will know that their betrayal was what drove me to my place in the ground.
And from my station I will admire you, encircling our sphere at dizzying heights,
and wish that I could join you in your revolutions.

Cover us with beauty, the only beauty you've known:
your own, and that which you have gathered through
the many eons you've participated in beyond the paltry now that's seen.
My reach is long, but hindered by my duties here, and doubts. And though
you may know so many new things, I am beyond you and your knowing.
For I have, on selfish whim, struggled to force my way through the veil,
and have only found the All-Encompassing Have Not, waiting on the other side.

Author's Notes/Comments:

All-Encompassing Have Not. This poem was heavily, heavily effected by the fact that I've been reading a lot of Dune.
