Looking in the salty water
I see a reflection of a girl
A girl with soft curls
And curious hazel eyes
A girl who is only afraid
Before her daddy scares
Away the monsters
A girl who believes in happily ever after
And true love
A girl who believes
Life is as simple as 1+1
And knows the answers
To any of her life’s questions
A girl who believes any injury can be healed
With a parents kiss
And that it only matters
What mommy and daddy thinks
And a girl that knows
Exactly what she wants
Then I look again
I see a different girl
Quite a few years older
This girl has funky hairstyles
That scream “dysfunctional”
And eyes that are often blood shot and dark
From pondering life’s meaning
She is scared of everything now
Especially her alcoholic father
A girl who knows happily ever after
Is a farce
And true love only happens
In PG rated movies
A girl who knows
There is nothing simple about life
She knows life is a territory
That she is not ready to explore
A girl who knows many injuries
Are self-inflicted
That are now hidden
From her mother’s eyes
And that it doesn’t matter
What anyone thinks
And she has no idea
What she wants
I look again
And I see
These two girls are the same
I am looking at myself
