Emergence

I started in this world as a caterpillar
Small, fragile, always overlooked, stepped on
Toyed with, poked at, and made fun of
So I decided to change
I ate, ate until I was full, then ate some more
I became a big fat caterpillar
Too big to move, unable to do anything but eat
A big fat lazy slug
Ugly, worthless, overlooked
Kicked, tortured, abused but it didn't matter
Because I had formed a chrysalis, and I knew
I was just waiting
Waiting for something better, for something new
For the ME I was meant to become
I hid inside my hardened shell, my cocoon
Protecting myself while I made myself strong
Made myself beautiful
Turned myself into what I was meant to be
I heard nothing, felt nothing, was nothing
But I was becoming I was evolving
And now, with the pain behind, the hurt, and the anger
I have emerged
