Morning Rain

Folder:
2008

I first saw you standing in an empty alleyway;

Our eyes met, and we really didn't know what to say.

Our lips locked, and everything just melted away;

I gave my heart to you on that midsummer's day...

My mother loved you, said you were perfect for me;

Your father hated me, said I was a loser, will always be.

They never saw in us what we ourselves could see,

And yet they thought they saw our mutual destiny.

Your father hit you one night after having too much to drink,

My mother died, and my dad ended up in the clink:

We both decided to run away without having to think,

And my dad's preacher married us with a nod and a wink.

We hitchhiked to the city, with nothing else planned;

You got a waitress job, and I sang for a rock n' roll band.

One night, at a gig, I saw you kiss another man:

I had to leave the stage, take your ring off my hand.

Next morning it rained; found a note on the door,

Your things gone, you weren't there anymore.

It rained harder, I cursed and swore;

My heart, once light, now hardened to the core...

Whatever happened to the love we knew,

When we thought all our dreams had finally come true?

Suddenly...out of the blue,

I no longer loved you...

Your gentle touch could wake me from a morning's slumber;

Your tender kiss could take away all my pain.

But now what God had said no man could ever put asunder

Has been washed away...by the morning rain...

Author's Notes/Comments:

This is a song I first came with when I was in Atlanta last year...when I finally sat down to write it, it just flowed onto the page. It's about a young couple that come from broken homes, fall in love, and take their chances in the city, to start a new life. But in the end someone ruins the love they had. Something I think we can all relate to, because I'm quite sure it's happened to all of us before...
