Tall Grass

I stood confused
Surrounded by children
As many children in a school yard
But not a cement covered school yard

In a park
The trees were tall
There were flowers and
Tall grass

The children ran
jumped
climbed and
clapped hands

They were in trees
On monkey bars
slides
and swings

They were laughing
Some singing
Those school yard chants

And then I heard you
Call out to me-
"Mommy!"

I turned to look for you
Desperately searching
Amongst the sea of children

I heard you again
"Mommy!"

And there you were
By the gate
It was a picket gate
Painted white
You stood on tip toe
And undid the latch

I called out,
"Brady!  Wait for me!"
You turned and smiled
And you called back
"I love you Mommy!"
And waved goodbye

I waved goodbye too
"I love you too..."
Wishing I could hold you
kiss you

But instead
I watched you
run up the hill
Into the tall grass
And noticed
How the sun danced on
Your light brown hair.
