Silent Ending

He and she drinking coffee
out of different cups.
His was velvet blue.
Hers was bitter red.

They had nothing left
to drink together.

They had no reason
to celebrate their
mutual disrespect.

He watched T.V.,
not seeing the images
the screen reflected.
She read a book
that held no words,
empty blank pages.

They had absorbed
their history in silence.

He and she eating dinner
on their table of marriage.
He ate rotted meat.
She ate poisoned apples.

They forgot the reason
that they had
used to begin.

He grew a beard
to champion a disguise.
She cut her hair
and told him lies.

They have nothing left
to dream together.
