They were forcing the distance between them
with hearts ignoring the strumming of guitars
mimicking love songs on an old record player.
Ending sentences before they were stomped
into the festering mud caking the vision of unity.
They could exist, these two, as if the room
had a fence in the middle of it. That way they
could still see through the chain link barrier,
enabling them to be able to hurl barbs of
ignorance at one another. This helped in
digging the grave for their funeral. In the
chaos of the melodrama, each would notice
the ringing of the telephone and wonder
who was best equipped to play the fiction
of normalcy for the caller.

Christmas trees went up, Christmas trees
went down. Seasons began and ended.
They were manifesting their roles like
professional actors, smiling in perfect
harmony the plastic hearted disguises they
were surviving.

They were wounded people hastily applying
band-aides in a traffic accident. Living sounds
that were heard only as a catalogue of grievances.

The louder the music, the less they had to
disagree with.
